The Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia (WFNS) is recruiting a permanent, part-time Event Coordinator to take the lead on the organization’s annual, recurring, and one-off events.
The successful candidate will be a self-starter and a great team player who is equally comfortable working independently and as part of a small, nimble team. They will demonstrate a passion for relationship-building, excellent communication and organization skills, a strong aptitude for multi-tasking and managing deadlines, and an enthusiasm for the local literary community.

Hours: 20 hours per week (division of hours over week is flexible)
Compensation: $23,223 ($46,445 annual salary pro-rated) with optional benefits package
Location: Halifax (1113 Marginal Road), with occasional off-site work

The Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia (WFNS) is a membership-based, registered nonprofit organization with charitable status based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. WFNS serves the creative and professional needs of some 800+ members engaged in a diverse range of writing activities. Our work includes organizing workshops and professional development programming, connecting members to resources, promoting member events, and advocating on behalf of writers. We also coordinate literary awards, a mentorship program, a writers in the schools program, and a contest for unpublished writers.
Our mission is to foster creative writing and the profession of writing in Nova Scotia; provide advice and assistance to writers at all stages of their careers; encourage greater public recognition of Nova Scotian writers and their achievements; and enhance the literary arts in our regional and national culture.
Event Coordinator
Key areas of responsibility
- Lead the planning and delivery of recurring, annual, and one-off events, both in-person and online, such as book markets, public readings, fundraisers, info sessions, and social events for writers
- Create promotional material for events, including social media graphics, posters, press releases, and ticketing systems
- Organize and manage volunteers for events
- Manage event budgets
- Support Executive Director with sponsorship requests and funding applications
- Support other WFNS staff in planning events and programs that aim to foster a sense of community within our membership
Other responsibilities
- Occasionally assisting the Program Manager (Membership Services) with evening workshop facilitation
- Occasional administrative tasks
Applicant requirements
- Significant recent experience in event coordination (many smaller events, a few larger events, or some combination)
- Experience in volunteer management
- Demonstrable background/interest in literature or publishing
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proven initiative and self-management (working independently)
- Confidence in addressing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) concerns and in working cross-culturally
Applicant assets
- Graphic design experience
- Familiarity with WordPress websites
- Familiarity with Zoom videoconferencing
