Atlantic Publishers & Periodicals

Information in this database was initially gathered in 2021 and is updated as publishers contact us. Please check publisher / periodical websites for any permanent changes to guidelines or any temporary holds on submissions.

To submit or update a listing, please contact communications@writers.ns.ca with all required information and the subject line “Atlantic Publishers & Periodicals.”

Each publisher / periodical has unique submission guidelines. Individualizing your pitch, query, or submission to meet the required guidelines and formatting is crucial: it shows editorial staff that you take the submission process seriously, that you respect their time, and that you can be professional and attentive during any potential publication process. Editorial staff always have limited time to consider high quantities of submissions and often are working on a volunteer basis, so they may have to reject submissions unread if they do not meet guidelines. If you have questions about guidelines, contact editorial staff for clarification.

Each publisher / periodical specializes in certain genres. Pay close attention to the genres requested by each publisher / periodical: don’t submit a contemporary children’s book to a press that publishes only historical non-fiction or a Mars colonization story to a journal that publishes only rural poetry. Reading a few issues of a periodical or reviewing a publisher’s back catalogue is the best way to determine if your work might be a good fit.

“Simultaneous submission” means submitting the same manuscript to more than one publisher / periodical at the same time, a common and commonly acceptable practice. We strongly recommend—and most publishers / periodicals require—that you indicate if a submission is simultaneous (in your cover letter or submission email) and that you notify them if the manuscript is accepted elsewhere.

When submitting your work simultaneously, keep track of your submissions so that you can easily notify all other parties if your work is been accepted somewhere. This courtesy prevents publisher / periodical staff from spending time considering your already-accepted work and ensures you maintain good relationships with the potential future publishers of your next great project!

Simultaneous submission should not be confused with “multiple submission” (i.e., submitting more than one manuscript to the same publisher or periodical at the same time), which almost always violates submission guidelines by exceeding submission limits.

Type a writing genre, writer identity, or other key term into the search box below to show only the relevant publishers. To show all listings, clear the search box.

Publishers marked with a partner symbol (⚯) are partner or hybrid presses, which provide fee-based services to writers pursuing self-publishing options. If you’re seeking partner or hybrid press services, you can also visit our Service Directory. We encourage all partner and hybrid publishers, and those seeking their services, to familiarize themselves with the Independent Book Publishers Association’s standards for professional hybrid publishing.

Recommended Experience Levels

The Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia (WFNS) recommends that each workshop’s participants share a level or range of writing / publication experience. This is to ensure that each participant gets value from the workshop and is presented with information, strategies, and skills that suit their current writing priorities.

To this end, the “Recommended experience level” section of each workshop description refers to the following definitions developed by WFNS:

  • New writers: those with no professional publications (yet!) or a few short professional publications (i.e., poems, stories, or essays in literary magazines, journals, anthologies, or chapbooks).
  • Emerging writers: those with numerous professional publications and/or one book-length publication.
  • Established writers/authors: those with two book-length publications or the equivalent in book-length and short publications.
  • Professional authors: those with more than two book-length publications.

For “intensive” and “masterclass” creative writing workshops, which provide more opportunities for participant-to-participant feedback, the recommended experience level should be followed.

For all other workshops, the recommended experience level is just that—a recommendation—and we encourage potential participants to follow their own judgment when registering.

If you’re uncertain of your experience level with regard to any particular workshop, please feel free to contact us at communications@writers.ns.ca
