Event Bookings

Request in-person or virtual space for a literary event (the launch of a new book, the regular meeting of a writing group, etc.) by filling out the form below. We will contact you by email regarding your request as soon as possible. If you have not heard from us within one week of submitting your request, please follow up with Andy Verboom at communications@writers.ns.ca.

Event bookings are subject to availability and open only to current General Members of the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia (or to those organizing an event including one or more current General Members). We recommend submitting requests at least one month in advance of your preferred event date.

When your request is successfully submitted, you will receive a confirmation message in this browser window and a confirmation email at the email address entered below.

1. Member details

To submit a booking request, you must be a General Member or be requesting event space on behalf of a General Member. General Membership is open to anyone who writes.
Your email address is for internal use only and will not be made publicly available unless also included in your bio or event description.
The Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia strives to offer inclusive physical and virtual spaces where all feel welcome.

To this end, we require that all participants of WFNS events and of member-organized events in WFNS’s spaces (1) refrain from speaking or behaving in racist, xenophobic, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or other discriminatory ways and (2) provide reasonable advanced warning before describing violent or traumatic subject matter, which always has the potential to distress others.

If any event participant violates this statement of inclusion, WFNS staff, board members, volunteers, and contractors (including workshop instructors) and hosts of member-organized events have the right to ask that participant to leave. If the event is member-organized, WFNS support for the event may be immediately withdrawn.

WFNS’s full Code of Conduct is available from WFNS staff upon request.

2. Event details

Additional required fields will appear when you selection "Public event" and / or "Virtual event."
• If your event is open to the general public, all details entered in this section will be publicly available as part of the event listings shared by WFNS on our website and in our member newsletter.
• If your event is private (e.g., limited to the members of a writing organization or writing group), no details will be publicly posted.
• In-person event space is provided at 1113 Marginal Rd, Halifax. Please review our event guide Member events at 1113 Marginal Rd and make use of our public parking and wayfinding map.
• Virtual event space is provided via WFNS's Zoom accounts. Please review our event guide Etiquette & Tips for Virtual Events.
• Because WFNS is a small organization, WFNS staff members do not have the administrative capacity to host, co-host, or speak at member-organized events.

3. Logistical details

To encourage good turnout, we recommend selecting a Sunday afternoon or a weekday evening, starting at approximately 7pm.

Recommended Experience Levels

The Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia (WFNS) recommends that participants in any given workshop have similar levels of creative writing and / or publication experience. This ensures that each participant gets value from the workshop and is presented with information, strategies, and skills that suit their career stage. The “Recommended experience level” section of each workshop description refers to the following definitions used by WFNS.

  • New writers: those with less than two years’ creative writing experience and/or no short-form publications (e.g., short stories, personal essays, or poems in literary magazines, journals, anthologies, or chapbooks).
  • Emerging writers: those with more than two years’ creative writing experience and/or numerous short-form publications.
  • Early-career authors: those with 1 or 2 book-length publications or the equivalent in book-length and short-form publications.
  • Established authors: those with 3 or 4 book-length publications.
  • Professional authors: those with 5 or more book-length publications.

Please keep in mind that each form of creative writing (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and writing for children and young adults) provides you with a unique set of experiences and skills, so you might consider yourself an ‘established author’ in one form but a ‘new writer’ in another.

For “intensive” and “masterclass” creative writing workshops, which provide more opportunities for peer-to-peer feedback, the recommended experience level should be followed closely.

For all other workshops, the recommended experience level is just that—a recommendation—and we encourage potential participants to follow their own judgment when registering.

If you’re uncertain of your experience level with regard to any particular workshop, please feel free to contact us at communications@writers.ns.ca
