Second-Wave Relief Fund
The Second-Wave Relief Fund was a short-term subsidy fund created in recognition of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the literary industry, particularly on the financial means of some writers. Applications were open to all Nova Scotia writers from January to March, 2021.
Subsidies provided through the Second-Wave Relief Fund were intended to assist Nova Scotia writers experiencing financial hardship in managing basic expenses so that they could continue to produce writing in the face of that hardship. Each subsidy took the form of a one-time payment of $250 to a writer.
Twenty subsidies of $250 each were available. Subsidies were distributed until the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2021.
Administered by the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia (WFNS), the Second-Wave Relief Fund was supported by donations received from members of the writing community in Nova Scotia and beyond. These donations were matched by WFNS contributions.
To apply for a subsidy, writers were required to confirm their residency in Nova Scotia and to provide some detail about their writing practice. Writers did not need to be members of the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia to be eligible.
