1,000 Words: An Exhibition of Illustration was a group show of work by Nova Scotia artists working in illustration. The exhibition was displayed at Teichert Gallery from November 14 to December 1, 2019.
Participating illustrators attended the 1,000 Words opening reception, held on November 14, 2019, where they discussed their work with the public and signed copies of their books, made available for sale by Woozles, Canada’s oldest children’s bookstore.
A closing children’s storytime event, held on December 1, 2019, featured a storyteller from Woozles as well as author-illustrators Doretta Groenendyk (A Harbour Seal in Halifax; You Make Me Happy; Love You More Than Anything) and Briana Corr Scott (She Dreams of Sable Island), who provided live illustration demos and answered questions about their work.
The work of 18 illustrators was featured
and available for sale:
Eligible artworks included framed works, gallery canvasses, limited-edition prints (in runs of 50 or fewer), and photographs (signed and numbered by the artist). Each artist could submit up to five works for consideration. The final selection of works was decided by a volunteer accessions committee administered by Teichert Gallery.
The Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia is based in Kjipuktuk, in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship,” which Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) Peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1725.
The treaties do not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognize Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) title and establish the rules for an ongoing relationship between nations.
