Guide for WITS Writers
This information is for WFNS Writers’ Council members who already participate in WITS as visiting writers or illustrators. For information on your eligibility to participate in WITS, please contact Linda Hudson (Arts Education Officer) at email@example.com.
By being specific in your WITS profile about what you do in school environments, you streamline the booking process: WFNS can simply accept a booking request, confirm your availability, and provide a school with your contact information.
Communicating with WFNS:
We will provide you with a list of all of your school visits for the year. For each visit, we’ll indicate school, contact info for the teacher/librarian, address, phone, e-mail and whether it is a full or half day booking. This is to help you keep all the details of your visits in one place.
Communicating with teachers:
WFNS requires teachers and other hosts to contact you directly to confirm specific visit details (date, time, number of students, special considerations, and directions to the schools). If you have not heard from each school within one month, please let us know. It’s a good idea to call the school again about a week before your scheduled visit. Because bookings are made well in advance, it’s easy to grow hazy on the details. Always confirm the date, time, class size, your lunch requirements, etc. Ask that someone be there to meet you on arrival and to show you around the school.
Number of visits to expect:
Booking requests for individual writers ebb and flow from year to year. You may be booked to the max one year and receive no bookings the following year. The past 25 years of WITS programming has shown that there is a markedly greater demand for grades P to 9 than for grades 10 to 12. With this imbalance in mind, we are developing a plan within the WITS program to target high schools and encourage their increased participation.
Remember, when it’s a full day booking, the school is required to provide you with lunch. In the interests of your taste-buds and any food restrictions you may have, we suggest that you discuss this lunch with your contact teacher in advance of the visit. If you’d like to be greeted with a cup of tea or coffee, why not discuss this with the teacher as well.
Writer fees and mileage:
Don’t forget to send us your invoice (see the form below) for each visit. We process received invoices once per month. Do not accept payment from a school directly.
Please reach out to us if you are unable to open or print the WITS invoice above, if you have questions, if there are changes to bookings, if you need advice, or if you encounter difficulties with a school that are not graciously solvable. We are your backup team!
