Members who meet professional publication requirements defined in the By-Laws of the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia may apply for Writers' Council membership. Only Writers' Council members may participate in the Writers in the Schools (WITS) program, serve as WFNS workshop instructors, and feature in our 'Writers in NS' listing.
Applications for membership in the WFNS Writers’ Council must be submitted to the Membership Committee c/o the Executive Director (email@example.com). The Membership Committee consists of two Board members, one Writers' Council member, and the Executive Director. The membership Committee reviews all applications to the Writers' Council and makes a recommendation to the WFNS Board of Directors as to whether applications meet the Writers' Council criteria.
Complete applications must include a curriculum vitae, a detailed bibliography, and a cover letter demonstrating how the applicant’s CV meets Writers’ Council criteria as outlined in the WFNS By-Laws below. Please note:
-- Applicants to the Writers' Council must provide bibliographic detail for publications using the MLA format style guide. (A quick guide to the MLA style is available at the Dalhousie University Libraries here.)
-- For applications based on periodical publications, applicants must clearly identify which of their periodical publications make up the eligible body of 30,000 words the Membership Committee is being asked to consider.
Writers' Council Application Requirements:
42.1 All applicants to Writers' Council must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants and must enclose for the Membership Committee a complete curriculum vitae, a detailed bibliography, and a cover letter demonstrating how the applicant’s CV meets the following criteria:
(a) That the applicant has had a prose book (fiction or non-fiction) or a book of poetry professionally published or a full-length play, or five one-act plays professionally produced or published, or broadcast by a national or regional network broadcast medium; or
(b) That the applicant has had professionally published, broadcast, and/or anthologized articles, columns, reviews, features, fiction, radio or film scripts of an aggregate 30,000 words, or a body of poetry ruled professional by the Membership Committee; or
(c) That the applicant is a full member in good standing of The Writers' Union of Canada, the League of Canadian Poets, the Playwrights Union of Canada, the Professional Writers Association of Canada, the Writers Guild, the Canadian Association of Journalists, or CANSCAIP (the Canadian Society of Children's Authors, Illustrators and Performers), provided that the criteria for full membership in such organizations equals the criteria specified above in 42.1 (a) and (b).
