Pictou Island Wooden Tents will host their first-ever writing workshop retreat this summer from August 1st to 3rd. The three-day event, led by veteran writing instructor and author Gwen Davies, is designed for writers of fiction and life story and feature both idea-storming and formal guided sessions at various unique locations on Pictou Island. Participants will stay at the Wooden Tents site and have the use of a cruiser bicycle for the three days. The small-group retreat will begin Tuesday morning when the ferry arrives and wrap up with a participant presentation, catered dinner, and party on Thursday evening. Participants can leave on any one of three ferries to the mainland Friday. People will only need to bring their personal items, a sleeping bag and pillow, and food and drink for the three days. Meal themes will be provided and everyone will share the fully equipped kitchen pavilion. (Ice is available at the store) During the retreat, the group will learn ways to bring characters to life, look at how place tells the story, and explore the process of creating the narrative. Each attendee will have the opportunity to examine what works for other writers, and develop their own abilities through group feedback sessions. During the three days, two afternoons will be set aside to regenerate, mingle, and explore the island. “I think the Wooden Tents nestled in this rustic island community will provide a wonderful back drop to inspire the creative juices,” said coordinator Gwen Davies. Participants will depart from Caribou, Nova Scotia on Tuesday morning for the 45-minute ferry ride to the island. The Wooden Tent site is a short walk from the island’s wharf and only store where ice and drinking water are available. The property includes a lovely sand beach, a vineyard, and a blue heron colony. The six wooden tents are 8 feet square and 8 feet tall and built from local hemlock with a shingled roof and canvas on either end. Each tent includes two 30” x 80” foam mattresses, a small picnic table and two chairs. The common cooking pavilion is equipped with two barbecues, all sorts of cooking utensils, and a wash-water sink. There is also an enclosed fire pit, a solar shower, and three sweet outhouses. The campground has solar electricity for charging phones and laptops and ambient lighting at night. WiFi is available at the island’s community centre CAP site. Gwen Davies teaches creative writing at NSCC and has led private workshops and retreats across Nova Scotia for many years. In 2000, she founded the acclaimed Community of Writers writing retreat at Tatamagouche. Her recent collection of short stories, Facing the Other Way was published last year by Boularderie Island Press and her book 5 Keys to Making Your Website Clear and Usable is available for Kindle or Pring on demand. Her stories have appeared in a number of literary magazines in the US and Canada, and in 2013 she won The Antigonish Review’s Sheldon Currie Fiction Award.
